WHO WE ARE

Our family is originally from Livorno by many generations. Our story and places are strongly related to the sea; but as soon as we saw The Tregge, it was love at first sight. Only 8 km from our city Livorno there are enchanted places like this and we never noticed them! And we decided to move to the stunning countryside of Nugola. A particular location, surrounded by olive groves and vineyards, tree-lined streets and small hills from where you can see the sunset.

We began to grow our small vegetable garden, our olives and our vineyards and we began to enjoy the beautiful and quiet days filled with spring scents before, then the sunny summers, and finally autumnal breezes. And we said, why not to share these wonders with visitors eager to experience the real Tuscany that is so fascinating? The Tregge is large enough to host you and to dedicate the attention you deserve.

It will be a pleasure for us to provide you with all the information and tips to better manage your time in Tuscany and make your excursions and visits in the best way.

TREGGIA

Our Name History

Villa Le Tregge takes its name from the area where it is, called “Pian delle Tregge”. Apparently in the previous centuries there used to be paths crossed by “tregge” which were carrying all sorts of stuff from Pisa countryside to Livorno port and back.

The “treggia” was an old means of transportation, a sort of stretcher (mainly used to carry goods or materials as well as people) whose rear part was posed on the floor whilst the front end was tied to a horse, a donkey or a mule to be towed along. Of course the goods were placed on the inner part.
The treggia was used by people everywhere in the world for a very long time; very few industrial means of transportation had such a longevity. It was the very first tool to carry stuff used by the prehistoric man to save energies: initially was towed by men and then by animals; we can say that the treggia accompanied the journey of the human race for a period that goes from 7000 AC until the beginning of the past century.

Despite technology has brought about more sophisticated means of transportations, treggia is still very much alive at present days for twi reasons: firstly because it is very cheap and easy to build and secondly because it is extremely versatile and multi-purpose.
Treggia was in fact perfectly suitable for any seasons and types of ground; when the rain was causing the ground to become marshy or when the snow and the ice was making it slippery, the wheels could not be used but the treggia could easily be towed anywhere.

In Tuscany, people belonging to the working class started to use the term “going by treggia” as the equivalent of “going by carriage”; in other words, going for a nice journey with all comforts, without making efforts and relaxing. Similarly, we would like to carry you on our own treggia and let you drive in the tranquillity and in the nature, both inside our Villa (where you will be cuddled) and around the fantastic Tuscan attractions.
